Message From The Dean

A warm welcome to Faculty of Applied Sciences, AIMST University website. In the era of genomics and synthetic biology, Biotechnology is truly an emerging field which has a bright future in the advancement of mankind. It supports the Government's initiative, since biotechnology has been identified as an "Engine of Growth" to help the nation achieve developed status by the year 2020.

We have excellent academic staff, support staff, cutting edge molecular biology laboratory facilities and university infrastructure to cater the academic and research activities in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs in Biotechnology. I am happy to inform you that our BSc (Hons) Biotechnology program (A 9263) obtained "Grade A" (91/100 marks) in the re-accreditation evaluation done by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) on 28 April 2011. The placement rate of our past students of B.Sc (Hons) Biotechnology was 99%; 71% got job, 1% started their own company and 27% are doing their post graduation. Our students are "most sought" in local universities for their post graduate programs.

Our postgraduate programs are getting popular: We have postgraduate program in M.Sc Biotechnology (by research) (A 4623) and PhD in biotechnology (by research) (PA 8453) which provide the students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge through independent research in a selected cutting edge field of Biotechnology. Most of the postgraduate students are receiving fellowships under funded research project or under national/international fellowship programs. Research is being carried out on various aspects of Biotechnology with the research funding of about RM 700,000 received from Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based industry (MOA) Malaysia, Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia and MOSTI. The post graduate program not only attracted national funding, it also proved that our students of world class quality. The following are few examples: 1. World Federation of Scientists Fellowship awarded to 4 of our MSc Biotechnology students in October 2010; 2. One of our MSc Biotechnology students received Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP)-Summer Internship Program at Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan in May 2011; 3. Four of our MSc Biotechnology students received MyBrain15 - MyMaster – Ministry of Higher Education Scholarship. Our faculty has signed MoU with many Bionexus companies which regularly conduct Campus interviews and industrial training for our students.

With proficient and dynamic leadership, well qualified academic staff, well-built academic programs focused on biotechnology; and smart partnership with industries, AISMT University is focused to spearhead Biotechnology in the northern region of Malaysia.
