Dr. S. Sreeramanan, Department of Biotechnology has obtained RM 40,000.00 from Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) for a collaborative research programme with Dr. Umarani Sinniah,UPM on “Induction and cryopreservation of embryogenic cell suspensions of selected banana cultivars” (2007-2009).

Dr. S. Sudhakaran, Deparatment of Biotechnology was awarded a Junior Scientist fellowship (travel grant) by Helmholtze Foundation Leipzig, Germany to attend the International Symposium on Environmental Biotechnology, held at Leipzig, Germany, July 9-13, 2006.

Department of Biotechnology organized an international conference at PWTC Kuala Lumpur from 17-21 June 2007. The Asia Pacific Conference on Plant Tissue Culture and Agribiotechnology 2007 was co-organized and co-sponsored by AIMST University, the Ministry of Agriculture & Agro-based Industry and the State Government of Kedah,   under the auspices of the Asia Pacific Association of Plant Tissue Culture and Agribiotechnology. The event was also supported by eleven collaborators, viz. Kulim Hi-Tech Park, MARDI, Academy of Sciences Malaysia, University of Malaya, University Science Malaysia, Forest Research Institute, Malaysia, Malaysian Bio-industry Organisation, National Biotech Division, the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre, APAFRI and FELDA. A total of about 450 delegates from 28 countries attended the event. The programme included something for everyone interested in Biotechnology. Among the highlights were an Orchid Symposium as well as a Business Forum and a Trade Exhibition.  
                                              There were 12 Plenary Lectures, more than a 100 oral presentations and 126 poster presentations. The Proceedings of the Conference will be published by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. The Conference Opening on 18 June was officiated by YB Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek, Minister of Health while The Ministry of Works sponsored a Welcome Luncheon officiated by YB Dato’ Seri S. Samy Vellu, The Minister of Works. The Conference Banquet held on 19 June at Seri Pacific was sponsored by the State Government of Kedah and hosted by The Mentri Besar, YAB Dato’ Seri Mahdzir bin Khalid, who was represented by YB Dato’ Cheong Itt Chew. The one-day Orchid Symposium on the last day of the conference was officiated by YBhg Tan Sri Datuk K. Ampikaipakan, Chairman, Board of Directors AIMST University and the Business Forum was moderated by YBhg Dato’ Dr. Mohammad Noor Embi, Director, National Biotech Division, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Professor A. Khomamine, President of the Asia Pacific Association of Plant Tissue Culture and Agribiotechnology, officially closed the conference on the evening of 21 November 2007.
