Duration of study:  Minimum: 3 years    Maximum:  5 years

The three year undergraduate programme at AIMST emphasizes the integration of theory with specialized practicals, while ensuring a sound basis in the relevant biological sciences that underpin the programme.

In the First Year, the students will acquire a good foundation in the critical life science courses, as well as in biostatistics and information technology that are tailored for biological applications.

The Second Year programme integrates genetics-based courses with modern biotechnology and includes an introduction to bioinformatics.

The Third Year courses expand further into special areas in biotechnology and molecular biology and also cover issues of biosafety, bioethics and the basics of business management for biotechnology enterprises. A research project is also included.

The main thrust of the Biotechnology programme is to give a comprehensive education in the fundamental concepts of modern biology and its application to techniques especially relevant for future commercial exploitation.

  ^  MSC IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

AIMST  has obtained approval to offer the postgraduate degree, M.Sc. Biotechnology.

Research Areas

Our current expertise lies mainly in integrating biodiversity with biotechnology towards obtaining value-added products for Agro-Biotechnology, Industry and Medical Biotechnology. A special area of interest is Bioinformatics for Functional Genomics and Systems Biology. (See below). Projects have also been developed, collaboratively, with staff from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Technology and the Department of Materials Science within the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The current research areas of interest are as follows:

·         Biodiversity & In Vitro Conservation

·         Bioremediation

·         Immunology and Monoclonal Antibodies

·         Microbial Pathology

·         Gene Regulation during Fruit Ripening and Flower Senescence

·         Bioreactors and Modelling

·         Bioinformatics & Systems Biology

·         Medicinal Plants  and Bioprospecting

·         Tissue and Cell Culture

·         Plant Genetic Transformation

·         Functional Genomics & Proteomics

·         Solid State Fermentation

·         Fish Breeding Under Improvement

·         Crystallography of Functional Proteins

·         Post-harvest Physiology and Biotechnology

·         Abiotic Stress in Plants

·         Signal Transduction Pathways

·         Protease Receptors and Allergens

Career Opportunities

With the launching of the National Biotech Policy & BioNexus in April 2005, the influx of multinational biotech companies to Malaysia has begun to grow steadily. Accordingly, job opportunities in biotechnology are set to escalate. Graduates in Biotechnology will have excellent opportunities to exploit their specialization and to provide research and management leadership in areas as diverse as the agricultural, medical, pharmaceutical, environmental and the food and manufacturing industries, such as in:

  • Forensic Science
  • Genetic Counselling
  • Marketing and Sales
  • R&D Management
  • Education
  • Biosafety and Ethical Issues
  • Environmental Monitoring and Remediation
  • Patents and Intellectual Property Rights
