BACHELOR  OF DENTAL SURGERY (BDS)

The BDS Programme involves the study of a wide variety of subjects. The biomedical sciences, the foundation for the study of clinical dentistry, provide an understanding of a structure and function of the human body.

Clinical management of patients requires an understanding of social and behavioral sciences, medical sciences, communication skills and law and ethics, in addition to knowledge of the clinical dental sciences.

The first year is a largely devoted to studying biomedical sciences. Other supporting sciences are taught during the course, with progressively more time being spend each year on clinical dentistry. In the final year clinical treatment of patients takes up a large amount of time.

In the first two years of The BDS programme students also take university courses in English and other subjects in the humanities.

Clinical Learning

Students are introduced to the dental profession and to common oral health problems in first year. The clinical component of Second Year is largely devoted to the learning of practical clinical skills and basic dental techniques. Each student practices dental procedure and learns how to handle instruments and materials in the simulation laboratory and dental technology laboratory.

In Third Year students learn how to examine, diagnose and plan treatments for patients with different types of dental problems. They work in a multidisciplinary Polyclinic environment with their own patients under close supervision.

Students practise many treatment procedures during Forth Year in all clinical disciplines. This continues throughout Fifth Year when comprehensive dental care is also taught to prepare students for working in general dental practice.
