The Department of Materials Science was formed in late 2002 and is presently offers a degree programme in BSc (Hons) Materials Technology with Management.
The interdisciplinary course in modern materials has been specially designed by AIMST staff to address the emerging areas that are industrially most relevant to the country and the region. Modern materials possess a multitude of applications and are often tailor-made with specific properties to fit well-defined needs in the market-place. The specialised materials include several new types of ceramics (e.g. nanoceramics), alloys, polymers (e.g. rubbers, plastics and textiles), composites, photonics, opto-electronics, fiber optic materials, high temperature super-conductors and biomaterials. Such materials are at the core of many emergent technologies. Students following this cutting-edge programme on the science and technology of materials will have ample rewarding opportunities to work subsequently in a gamut of industries. They will represent a creative and innovative workforce that the local industry and, in particular, the manufacturing sector, urgently needs to remain globally competitive. The 3-year course also introduces students to various aspects of management and business in relation to industrial practices thereby further enhancing their job prospects.
Apart from collaborative research with academic institutions, the Department also offers consultative services and tailored training programmes to industry in the northern region of the country.
